Causes of epilepsy

In 70% of cases, the cause of the person’s epilepsy is not known. Some known causes are:
- Traumatic brain injury or head injury (car accident, sports injury, shaken baby syndrome).
- Oxygen deprivation (e.g. during childbirth)
- Brain infections (e.g. meningitis)
- Brain tumors
- Other neurologic diseases (e.g. Alzheimer disease)
- Stroke
- Genetics
