Triggers for seizures

A seizure trigger is an external factor which can affect brain activity and bring on a seizure in a person who has epilepsy.

Some triggers include:Collage composed of four pictures of common seizure triggers: 1) A confused woman with a headache; 2) A man using a thermometer; 3) a man holding his head and, 4) Some pills.

  • Missed doses of medication.
  • Lack of sleep or fatigue
  • Stress or excitation
  • Fever (febrile seizure)
  • Elevated body temperature
  • Colds, flu or some kind of infection
  • Menstrual or hormonal cycle
  • flashing or bright lights (photosensitivity)
  • Toxicity/drug overdose
